New Year, New Life

A remnant of the penitentiary

Until 1890 the grim Millbank Penitentiary stood where the Tate Britain is today. It also encompassed the neighbouring Royal Army Medical College and the Millbank Estate at the rear. Some of the bricks from the Penitentiary were used to build the estate.  The only remnant of it is this sunken terrace - the former moat of the prison. Now used by residents of the flats to grow plants and hang out washing.
Just one of the things covered on my Three Bridges walk this afternoon. The rain stopped just in time for the start!
