This is High Street above Haweswater. Originally a Roman road ran across these tops as the Romans preferred to move their goods and people well above the valleys which were inhabited by wild animals and local tribes.

There was once a horse fair up here and 'Racecourse Hill' appears on some OS maps. It was well away from the excise man and the annual event was infiltrated by thieves, horse stealers and illicit alcohol dealers. Lanty Slee probably had a good list of customers.

The day this was taken we were well behind schedule and as the sun was setting we were just reaching the summit having come up from Riggindale Edge. The descent down to Nam Bield Pass wasn't our best idea and we were fortunate to get off the mountain before the snow started again.
