Operculum

Last year I set about photographing all the wall plaques in Lewes. This year's project is going to be recording domestic cast iron coalhole covers (opercula). I have no idea how many there are but I've noticed several different designs and thought it would be worth recording them as they tend to be removed whenever pavements are replaced or repaired. The Every family owned the Phoenix Ironworks in Lewes which was the largest employer for many years.

Postscript - I've only just realised that the design in today's blip is remarkably similar to yesterday's. I must be drawn subconsciously to circles at the moment.
