Puffin (if a little blurred)

The weather was poor so we were expecting the evening boat trip around Skomer to be cancelled. We spent the day pottering about, selecting food from a local deli and checking on the weather. We had decided that as the forecast for the next few days was so poor we would head home Tuesday either as soon as we knew the boat trip was cancelled or after the trip if it took place. In the early afternoon we got the call to say the Evening Seabird Spectacular on the Dale Princess was on.
Jane wanted to see a place where they make Welsh blankets so we headed over and looked round a small factory and shop. Next on the agenda was Abereiddy Blue Lagoon, on the way we saw a sign to The Sloop Inn, Porthgain (well worth a visit if you are in the area) so we took a detour for lunch and a breezy walk round the harbour. The Blue Lagoon was surprisingly blue given the overcast (dismal) weather. The lagoon is actually a flooded former slate quarry and you can still see some of the ruined quarry buildings on the cliffs. There were hardy souls swimming in the lagoon and others enjoying coasteering (an activity that encompasses travelling a rocky coastline on foot or by swimming, without the aid of boats, surf boards or other craft). Then back to the flat to pack and clear up before heading to Martins Haven.
Still windy and we were told the trip could be "bumpy". A short trip over to Skomer brought the first sightings of Puffins and we got nearer to the island the more we saw. It is difficult to describe the sheer numbers of seabirds in every direction. We saw Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills, Kittiwakes as well Herring and Lesser Black-backed and Greater Black-backed Gulls. High up on the cliffs we could also see a pair of Peregrine Falcons and as we travelled along the coast we watched by some grey seals. Heading out into the bay we saw Gannets and hundreds of Manx Shearwater gathering before heading for their burrows on the island after dark.
A fabulous trip finished just before 9.00 pm and was followed by a 4 hour drive back to Winchester.
This may not be the best photo I have taken but the bird is moving horizontally and the boat was going up and down. It sums up a great evening.
