Abbey Ruins

A walk along a footpath on a bluff above the North Sea, followed by a short bus ride, took us to the seaside town of Whitby and the abbey ruins. St. Hilda founded her abbey in 627 and abbey we visited today was built 600 years later. "There is no doubt that Saint Hilda's insistence on the importance of prayer and study had a profound effect on all members of her community so that Whitby became renowned for scholarship as well as holiness."
