Crossrail Tunnel Portal

I was ridiculously excited about our tour of the Crossrail station at Custom House, and the walk down to the tunnel entrance heading west to Canary Wharf. After the tunnelling finished this week, it's hard to believe it's still another three years until the new lines enter service. The workers and engineers who guided the tour were both funny and interesting, and a fair few of them were photographers too, which gave an extra dimension to the visit. If only I could access the areas of the project they do regularly! If only I'd got lucky sooner and won access to the other tour at Woolwich Station, and got to walk through the largely completed tunnel under the Thames!

Sigh I'm a tunnel geek - always have been, always will be, so even though I didn't get on the mega exciting alternative, I was hugely happy with this opportunity. We followed it up with a walk to the Emirates Air Line over to Greenwich, and a long walk home in the sun. We ended up walking about ten miles, got impressive tans and were so exhausted by the time that we got home were weren't any good for anybody. But it was all worth it.
