Granuaile's Castle

The tower house at Kildavnet, on Achill Sound was constructed in 1429 by the O' Malley clan, locally it is associated with the legendary pirate queen Grace O'Malley or Granuaile, who established a number of tower houses along the western sea board including the one on Clare Island where I was staying. This one is strategically placed overlooking the passage of water between Clew Bay and Blacksod Bay.
As the day was cold and grey with spots of rain I decided to drive to Mayo's north coast and the Ceide Fields site and exhibition centre. The site is the largest Neolithic site in the world containing house sites, court tombs and an extensive field system dated to 5,500 years old.
