Cereal yo-yoing

As I often say on here, life in Phnom Penh lurches and yo-yos from the dangerous to the comfortable, and from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Before a fun night out dancing with some great people, I was waiting outside this shop next to the cereal aisle to attract my friend's attention to let me in to her place. Nearby a woman sitting in a tuk tuk appeared to be drunk and having some difficulty.

Her: 'alright bruv?' (seemingly thinking that anyone in the world would understand Cockney slang)
Me: 'hello - are you alright?'
Her: 'well Steve reckons we're not pissed enough so he's in there buying wine'
Me: 'oh, do you live here?'
Her: 'yeah just arrived. We was in Malaysia before for four years'
Me: 'oh cool'
Her: 'no, it's shit'
Me: 'why's that?'
Her: 'full of Muslims innit'
Me: '.....'
Me: '.............'
Me: '...................... I don't think that's a problem'
Her: 'so, you know, we've just come here'

Lucky Phnom Penh and the Cambodian people that they will be the recipients of this backwardness.

The diversity of people you meet as an expat is incredible. Often inspiring, sometimes utterly depressing. Some people should not be allowed to apply for passports as at least their views will be confined inside the borders of one nation. Especially embarrassing that this was a British couple.
