To the river

I have walked past this wall in the middle of Appleby many a time and sometimes wondered about the letters EWS, vaguely thinking it must be some sort of ghosting of an old shop sign or advert. What I had never noticed before is the arrow.

This afternoon I discovered that the letters stand for ‘Emergency Water Supply’ and they were painted on the wall during the 2nd World War to direct fire wardens to the river for water in the event of a bombing raid. I don’t think it was ever needed.

Now I've discovered some more . . .!
