Heirloom

Yesterday was Father's Day. I was surprisingly not sad, despite it being my first without my kind-hearted dad.

He bought these dishes while serving in the Korean War and when his mother died, it was the only thing he asked for. Stories of his youth invariably included being in the service.

Imagine a small-town, farm boy with a big zest for life. It must have felt wonderful to be on his own, with nothing but life ahead and enough money in your pocket to buy your mom her first and only China dishes.
