Crossing the River – 3

River Eamont (Part 12)

So, we’ve arrived at Eamont Bridge, a village that straddles the River Eamont. And this is the bridge of Eamont Bridge. It is a three arched sandstone bridge, built in the 16th Century, with evidence of several alterations since.

This is the third of the three river crossings that are very close to each other and the most important. What’s a railway or a motorway compared to a major highway that has been used since Roman times and probably before that! The Roman High Street crossed the river here and the presence of a bridge in 1303 has been recorded. It was a drover’s route, the number of inns in the village reflecting this. And of course it is still a major road, but I will go into this further in the next blip.

Suffice to say for the moment –

The River Eamont, just a bit further down from the last stop at the Mill at Bleach Green. And Eamont Bridge.  Cloud all day and this was actually taken just before yet another shower.
