Grass Vetchling

A day recording quadrats at Grafham Water - and the first day of the year when I've really felt too hot. The meadows were remarkable for the quantity of grass vetchling present. This species thrives on heavy clay soils that are wet in winter, but bake dry in summer. The leaves look almost exactly like grass blades, but the almost fluorescent pink flowers make it easy to spot when it's in bloom.
