Nightjar surprise

Nightjar
(Caprimulgus europaeus)

E quite literally almost stumbled over this stunning looking bird resting on a stone by a small gorge near Braemar. I approached it very carefully to take the picture making sure that I did not disturb its afternoon slumbers. It did have a wary eye slightly opened observing us. We knew straight away what it was and were extremely surprised. According to the bird guides and the internet they have not been seen here before.

Saw a Cuckoo on the way back too - it had not yet changed its tune.

A 'lifer' for us too!
