Island of forts

'Cromwell's Fort' at the entrance to Inishbofin harbour. The island was one of the last Royalist strongholds to fall to Cromwell's army, following which this substantial barracks was built. Inishbofin is also home to Dún Gráinne, a fort used by the legendary pirate queen Gráinne O'Malley, and the ruins of a Celtic fort from circa 1000BC. The island is thought to have been inhabited for something like 10,000 years, although now only about 200 people live there.

This was a good place to spend the so-called 'jubilee' day (actually the anniversary of nothing in particular) - and to remember what happened to an earlier King Charles. What Cromwell did in Ireland was unforgiveable, but some of the things he did in England were not so bad, perhaps.
