A Rough Night on the Big Lake

After a nice night at a motel, Doug and I waited and waited for the rain to end. It wouldn't. We had breakfast. We did a little shopping, and we took a couple of short waterfall hikes. Finally, at about 4 p.m., we packed up and headed for Mosquito, our back-country stop for the night.

After yesterday's rain, parts of the trail were both muddy and a little treacherous. You really had to use the hiking stick to steady yourself. After 3 miles, we hit the lake.

While it wasn't raining, it was real foggy, and the big lake looked angry. We picked out campsite #3 near the river, and Doug cooked some freeze-dried spaghetti.(It was surprisingly good.) We were then lured to sleep by the river's current as it emptied into Lake Superior.

But, then came more problems. The heavy fog worked almost like rain, with the trees dropping their moisture onto your tent. And...it was COLD! Maybe the high 30's F. I zipped up my mummy bag like a real mummy, and slipped on the sweatshirt that I was using for a pillow. Still...my teeth chattered. Hard to sleep when you're cold.

But still...tomorrow awaits.
