Doune Castle

Doune Castle was originally built in the 13th century, and probably damaged in the Scottish Wars of Independence before being rebuilt in its present form in the 14th century by Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, the son of King Robert 11 of Scotland.



The castle was used as a location in MGM's 1952 film Ivanhoe featuring Robert Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor; it was also featured in the 1996 BBC adaptation of Ivanhoe. It was used as the set for the Game of Thrones and was also used as a stand-in for the fictional Leoch Castle in the TV adaptation of the Outlander series of novels.


Three of us walked today over at Doune village, a circular walk of eight miles which took us from Doune Village and along the River Teith to Buchany, where we had lunch at the antique centre there, and then through woods and fields back to the village where we wandered around the castle.  


Our weather was lovely, apart from a very short shower in the middle of our walk, but as we were having coffee in the pub when we finished, the skies opened and we had a downpour.   We were pleased to be inside.   And then the sun came out again and it is a lovely evening.
