Leaving

Today D, S and I cycled back over to Vatersay to walk its beaches and a couple of wee hills, Creag Mhor and Am Meall. Luke went on his own expedition up Heaval on Barra, so that he could be finished in time to watch Andy Murray.
This deserted settlement is at Eorasdail in the southeast of the island. It was set up by the Scottish Board of Agriculture in the early 20th century for landless people from elsewhere in the Outer Hebrides such as Mingualay.
The house in the background was the last to be built, in 1936.the first roads were built on Vatersay in the 1950's but Eorasdail was left off plans for roads and tracks so the community dwindled and was abandoned around 1966.
