THE ATLAS FOUNTAIN . . .

. . . at Castle Howard, near York, is working again after repairs earlier this year.

It is one of two fountains in the estate and was built at huge expense in 1850. Water is fed by gravity from a reservoir within nearby woodland.

The Sea Gods that surround Atlas were carved by the sculptor John Thomas who transported to this site from London by railway.
