Genghis Khan

Reigned from 1206 –1227, developing the hugely powerful empire of Mongolia. However I think he would be shocked, seeing the big city of Ulaan Bator with its 4 huge coal power stations if he rode over one of the surrounding hills these days! It was quite something dor us, after almost two weeks of the wonderful landscapes of the Mongolian Plains. We have so appreciated the hospitality of the Mongolian people who live an almost Mediaeval lifestyle with no phones, internet or even electricity, in their ger (tent encampments). We are full of admiration for the people running the ger camps which were invariably clean despite poor conditions sometimes. They managed to produce quality meals, even providing for us nuisance vegetarians!

Thank you to our guide, Ashley, and two wonderful drivers (see extra photo) provided by the Mongolian Secret History Society. Without Ashley's language skills and the drivers' intimate knowledge of the un-signposted dirt roads, we would not have been able to experience this vast and beautiful country.
