Castles

My job today was in North Berwick and Dirleton Castle is very close so why not blip.

Built in the early 13th century by John De Vaux, (sent by the English to keep we Scots in line) it was badly damaged during the wars between Scotland and England. Robert The Bruce partly demolished it to stop the English from using it, and it was repaired in the 14th century by the Haliburton family. In 1505 it was acquired by the Ruthven family who were involved in several plots against Mary Queen of Scots and King James the 6th. They were also involved in the murder of David Rizzio in the Palace of Holyrood House. They forfeited the castle in 1650 and has not been lived in since.

It came into state care in 1923 and is now maintained by Historic Scotland.

Hope you had a good Monday.
