Sir John Gordon attempted to defend The House of Kellie, now Haddo House, against the army of the Marquis of Argyll. Promised honourable terms, he surrendered on 8 May only to be brought to the Mercat Cross in Edinburgh and beheaded using an instrument known as “The Maiden” on the 19th of July 1644.
