The Diel's Heid

We spent the morning on the beach (again) then went for a very interesting walk along a geodiversity trail starting at Victoria park in Arbroath. This trail from Arbroath to Auchmithie is part of the Whiting Ness to Ethie Haven Site of Special Scientific Interest.  It was selected as an SSSI for its geological interest and also because it contains important areas of coastal grassland and cliff vegetation plus several different bird, plant and insect species.  The sea stack in the blip is formed of Lower Devonian sandstone, by marine erosion working along the joint-planes. The erosive forces at work include the power of the waves driven by wind and tides and also the debris the water transports to abrade the rocks.  A map of the trail provides an interesting diversion from the actual walking for children as they search for the features described. We added a feature of our own - the extra blip - and named it the mermaid's tail. The views were spectacular throughout the walk.
