The Mulberry Tree

This ancient Mulberry tree, with many props to keep it upright, is on the lawn at Walton Hall, the home of the Open University, where I used to work. In the background is the ultra-modern, Mondrianesque Jennie Lee building.

But the interesting thing I learned today about Mulberry trees is that they are the main source of food for silkworms. Their leaves, not the mulberries. This was told me by a colleague who's just back from frolicking with the Uzbegs and Kazacks and 'knows her onions', so to speak, where silkworms are concerned.

Next time I'm passing, I shall look for silkworms and see if there are any on our tree...
