Sun at the end of the day

You can't get much more rural than this church - the Parish Church of St Cuthbert, Milburn. It is down a narrow track between fields and stands all on its own outside the village of Milburn. Hidden amongst trees, you really wouldn't know it was there.

A mile or two from where we live, this was the first time we had visited it. A simple little place, beautifully cared for, built of red sandstone, typical of this part of Cumbria. In fact they say that this sandstone came from the quarry in our village.

Built on a Celtic site, parts of the Church date from Norman times. This doorway for example is a typical Norman arch design and there are some huge Norman style pillars inside.

A follow-on from yesterday's blip of the mithraenum
ceridwen (see her comment) reminded me of a temple to Mithras that was found in the City of London. I had not made this link, but then recalled something I had listened to on the radio. That's when I found a Melvyn Bragg 'In Our Time' discussion of the Cult of Mithras. It's here if anyone is really interested.
