Caste of Strijthagen

Strijthagen castle is the last fully intact aristocratic estate on the territory of the Dutch Limburg Landgraaf, located in the Strijthagerbeek, at the core Schaesberg.

The main building is situated on the banks of some the Strijthagerbeek fed ponds. It was in the 18th century on the site of an older castle. The walls of the main building consist of so-called white layers, in alternating layers of brick and stone (marl) which occur relatively frequently in Limburg, also including at Bongard's castle and the nearby castle Schaesberg. The castle complex further includes classicist steward house, the 17th century (1690) whitewashed for castle (also with classical elements), the mill called Strijthagermolen and the coach much more recently, all having the status of national monument. Both the main house and the steward house and the gatehouse of the castle are equipped with a mansard roof, which in Limburg, including at Puth castle and chateau Raath the case.

Castle Strijthagen has accumulated in the course of the twentieth century many mining damage. From 1952, the artist Aad de Haas lived for many years with his family in the castle.

Around Strijthagen castle today houses a recreation area with several amusement parks (theme park Mondo Verde, GaiaZOO).
