Soppy Poppy

My first school was Poppleton Road Infant School in York. At the age of about six or seven, I started to go home on the bus with my mates Martin and John.

The same bus used to bring pupils from another school a couple of miles away, and they would invariably greet us with...

"Kids from Poppy are so soppy!"

And we would rejoin...

"English Martyrs, squashed tomatoes!"

Now I'm grown up.
