South Fork Nooksack - Larson's reach

Construction season is about to get under way in western WA and while staking out engineered logjams (ELJs) to be built this summer I got the chance to check-in with ELJs contructed last summer.

Short story; Last year's constructed ELJs are just look great!

Flows this winter definitely tested our designs. We are seeing deep pool formation near multiple self-settling ELJs and also a lot of channel bed change, sediment sorting, and increased channel complexity. In particular the bar pictured here did not exist last summer and will create great spawning habitat when flows come up this fall/winter. Here's to channel change!
