Mary's Tree

This is a view from Mount Skip (Hebden Bridge) looking towards Cragg Vale.
In the centre of the playing fields in the foreground is an Ash tree.
This tree has been in the centre of the field for 225 years after being planted by tenant farmer David Greenwood in 1790.
It became known as Mary's Tree after William Whittaker saved the tree from being felled in 1900 because his daughter, Mary, was very upset at the thought of it being cut down as she enjoyed sitting and playing beneath it.
