Land of the summer people

Went walking this morning in the beautiful Somerset countryside, above the Levels. The name of Somerset is said to derive from 'land of the summer people', because in pre-Roman times it was thought only fit for habitation in summer. That explanation is disputed, but the devastating floods of a couple of winters ago suggest that there is some truth in it.

All that seemed very distant today on a beautiful summer morning.
