Hill country.

Throughout the centre of the North island there are many thousands of acres of hill country such as this. The early European settlers felled the native forest ,then as quickly as possible sowed pasture so as to raise sheep and cattle which was the mainstay of NZ's economy for many years. Now although  dairy farming is more prevalent on the easier contours there are still huge areas of hill country beef and sheep farming.
