Three Bears and lots of porridge now!

KrypoMart and I visited the Five Sisters Zoo (celebrating their 10th anniversary this year) in Polbeth, West Lothian, and again, like last time, were amazed at the caring environment they provide for their rescued animals, including Carmen, Suzi and Peggy, the three brown bears.

The bears spent spent 20 years living in cages barely bigger than themselves, and were transported around Europe as part of a Belgian circus troop.

The bears home at Five Sisters Zoo has a large built-in waterfall and stream with indoor and outdoor enclosures.

One of the bears, Suzy, is said to be so traumatised by the conditions she endured, that she sometimes still keeps walking in small circles.

At the zoo, these bears though still traumatised can now live their final years in a nurturing environment.

The latest rescue mission is to bring to the zoo, four rescued lions from another Belgian circus, again, where they were being treated and kept in very unsatisfactory conditions. Once the Rescue centre in Belgian had removed the lions from the circus trailer – the only home that the lions had ever known – they found it to be in a terrible condition with large pieces of metal jutting out and holes in the floor and the space terribly cramped for 4 large wild animals. Despite this the Belgian Rescue Centre has confirmed that "they are huge and in good health"

The zoo is in the process of raising £150,000 to build an enclosure, which will allow these lions to be brought over to the UK, for a better future. Here is a link to the zoo website: http://www.fivesisterszoo.co.uk

I hope you have all had a good Sunday.
