The Pelican Relief

I should probably have saved this for a day when the sun was shining and the stone was glowing, but I'm not in this part of town very often so today it is.

This is one of the more distinctive pieces of doorway embellishment in Bradford. On what was originally Victor House (10, Currer Street), part of a block of wool warehouses designed by Eli Milne in 1862, the current owner had renamed it Pelican House. The symbolism of the pelican seems to defy explanation for the moment.
