MM79:electricity

I've always liked pylons for their design, which hasn't changed for 90 years until recently. They first appeared in the UK in 1920, when only 6% of the country were connected. The 1926 Electricity Supply Act, brought in by Stanley Baldwin, established the National Grid and by the start of the Second World War, two thirds of country were connected.

What has fascinated me is who paints them ? I noticed that the pylons near us were being painted, but I never managed to see the workers. Pylons workers work 165ft off the ground, close to 44,000 volts. Each pylon takes 4 men a day to scrub and repaint with two coats each and every one of the 22,000 in the UK. There was a film called Among Giants, released in 1998 starring Pete Postlethwaite as a pylon painter from Yorkshire.

There's website that runs a pylon of the month competition www.pylonofthemonth.org
