Benmore Gardens. The one-time formal garden, with the flagstones over the grass to the sundial that used to be a fountain and pool reminding me of when almost 40 years ago I used to jump down them to amuse my firstborn. Today the sons of that laughing child run down these same stones in a last burst of activity before heading for home.

But take a careful look at the ground beneath these running feet and see the water splashing up with every step. This is summer in Scotland in one of the wettest holidays I can remember, and laughing at James in his wellies is the only way to cope.

That, or taking to drink ...
