A haven of peace

St Anne's Hospital was founded in 1653 by Lady Anne Clifford, as almshouses to help poor widows of Appleby. There are thirteen houses set around a cobbled courtyard and you get to them through a stone arched doorway from the main street (see below). It's like stepping into a different world.

Although still occupied today, the courtyard is usually open during the day so that passers by can peep in. Apparently there is a tiny chapel in one corner, but you have to ask one of the inhabitants if you may visit. I may do this one day.
