Dutch tales

Dutch desert

No, this is not sand along the coast, in our Dunes, though we do have plenty of sand there as well. This is right in the middle of Holland. Ages ago everything got cut down and left nothing but sand. Which provides us with beautiful sights nowadays. It needs to be maintained. Doing nothing, the trees and growths around it will slowly move in and make the sands disappear. I can't find an English name for this kind of area, where the sand moves in the wind (Dutch wikipedia). Holland has some of the last remaining such areas in North-West Europe.

I saw this during a beautiful and very interesting walk, starting at a place where a farmhouse and foodstore building from the iron ages had been rebuild. The farmhouse in in an extra photo, the entire walk at Flickr.
