Carex Secta .. .. .. .. ..

. . . . . is the scientific name given to these rushes or sedge, growing in 'our' ice skating pond, near Hunter Road, just under Coronet Peak. We used to know them by their politically incorrect name of 'niggerheads', (as did the early european settlers), and the Māori call them Makura.  I was out the door really early this morning, into the -7°C frost - it was very chilly on the hands. But beautiful! I loved it.
