From The Sand (Story 2)

They rose from beneath the sand. Their several metre wide wings were coated in dark red scales, except for the edges, which were lined with blue feathers. Their minuscule eyes looked confused and lost, but only for a few moments; they soon realised their purpose.
The person, who was watching these events unfold, was a plainly dressed boy, aged 15, who had black hair and an expression of awe. He had decided to fake being sick that day to get out of school, and he wondered if it was worth it.
He was transfixed, but he could not believe what he was seeing. One of these reptilian birds suddenly took flight. It soared so high up that it disappeared from the boy's vision. Then it dove back down at an angle towards the main part of town. The rest of the creatures silently followed their leader.
The boy, too, followed them as well as he could, but their speed was unbelievable, so he could not keep up with them. However, he knew exactly where they were when he heard some people, mainly children, fearfully scream. The creatures had flown towards the school of the area.
He did not want to confront the creatures. He had no reason to think they would harm anyone, but their long steel coloured talons certainly made them capable of it. He could not abandon his friends, though. He could not live with the guilt. He ran towards the school, wind rushing in his ears, heart beating more from anxiousness and shock, than from the sudden rigourous running. He was trying to block out all selfish thoughts, trying to focus solely on how to help his friends.
He was only 15 and no-one special, but he was determined, and when he was determined, things always went his way. Although, the only things he had ever been determined to do up to this point were getting new gadgets and keeping up with homework. This was an entirely different matter.
