Symonds Yat Ferry

Okay so this is a cheat - I actually took this photograph on my day out, yesterday... However, I thought it was interesting enough to show it to you today.

This is the historic 'rope ferry' at Symonds Yat and it has always played a big part in the life here. In 1800 there were 25 hand ferries between Ross-on-Wye and Chepstow just like this one outside Ye Old Ferrie Inn and the Saracen's Head pub today. They were introduced in Roman Times to link the forts of the Doward and the Yat and have served Military, Civilian, Tourist and Horse traffic over the years. Passengers hail the ferry by ringing a bell and a member of staff from the Saracen's Head pub then pulls the ferry and it's passengers across the river Wye.
