Walk to Burg Eltz

A walk to from Karden to Burg Eltz for a tour around the castle, lunch, sightseeing, then return on foot and train to Karden via Moselkern (11Km).
Eltz castle is a medieval castle situated in the hills above the Mosel River between Koblenz and Trier. It is still owned by a branch of the Eltz family who lived there in the 12th Century, 33 generations ago and is one of a very few castles on the left bank of the Rhine in this region that have never been destroyed.  It is surrounded on three sides by the River Elzbach and sits on a 70m rock spur, on an important Roman trade route between rich farmlands and their markets.
It wasn't a long walk today, but was still challenging due to the heat and the climb up from the valley floor to the castle. The tour was interesting with views of rooms from many centuries ago and some interesting wall tapestries, but it wasn't very well organised (unusual for Germany) and although we were booked in for 12 noon we didn't begin our tour for some time after that. Then we had a long queue for lunch.  Some of the group brought their own sandwiches, but J and I like to have a lunch if possible, just for a change.

The extra blip is a view of Karden taken from the hills above it.  Treis is on the far side of the bridge.
