New day - new beginnings

A special day

Still staying at Mosskógar camping site, we played tourists in Reykjavík city. Starting with a visit to Reykjavík photography museum and enjoyed a couple of interesting exhibitions. Afterwards we walked to The National museum, taking a detour through Hólavallakirkjugarður (graveyard). The weather was exceptionally good, the sun was shining and 15-16°C. At the National museum we started at the café, with some nice soup and bread, but then we took a look at an interesting photography exhibition by Valdimar Thorlacius, where Icelandic loners/hermits are the main subject. And since we had paid entrance to the museum, we also looked at another exhibition, but one could easily stay all day at the museum if one was utterly interested in Icelandic history and heritage. On our way back to the car we walked through Reykjavík downtown, and by the City hall (where this photo is taken).

By now it was time to visit my parents in law at the nursing home. My mother in law was fast asleep and looked a lot weaker than earlier. Her husband was watching over her, but then one of his grandsons arrived and invited his granddad for a ride in his sportscar. At first my father in law didn't want to leave, but when we said we would be there while he was away, he went out with his grandson. We took turns sitting by her side, holding her hand, and we were grateful for this time with her.

My father in law and his grandson returned after about an hour, both of them very happy with the ride. We stayed a little longer, but then we went to visit a friend of us who recently had a spinal surgery. As she lives far away in Saudi Arabia we don't get to see her very often, which is a shame because she and her husband are good friends of us. At least we got to see her this time around, but her husband was not in Iceland.

By now it was past dinner time, and we drove back to Mosfellsdalur, where we grilled some fish and had a late dinner. We were thinking a lot about my mother in law, and my husband called his father who told us she was fast asleep, but then only 15 min. later my husband's niece called to let us know that her grandmother had passed away. We went to the nursing home where we met my father in law, my husband's niece, and nephew plus his wife. We stayed there for more than an hour, said farewell to my mother in law and consoled each other. It was a very sad moment but we were glad to be there, especially as we live far away, but happened to be in Reykjavík when she died.
