"Hey, Watch Out for Those TREES!!!!"

The township is widening the road on the bad corner just past our house, and then the road will be paved on Thursday. So on this morning shortly after 7 am, a bunch of work men in hard hats, several huge trucks, and digging implements of various kinds and sizes showed up right outside our house, blocking our drive way for hours and hours. There was much noise and commotion, and so the revving of engines and the endless BEEP!-BEEP!-BEEP! took over our lives.

Dexter did not like it one bit. No, not ONE BIT! First, he ran around the house slinking low to the ground, with his ears back. He was on edge. He was listless. How could a Tabbycat be expected to get in all of his recommended daily allowance of naps with ALL THIS COMMOTION!??? Eventually, he took up a position on the front steps where he could look out the front door window and keep an eye on all of the suspicious characters milling about.

And worst of all, at one point, the men and machines began digging a big hole right at the edge of our front yard, to replace a drainage grate and pipe. They were worrisomely close to the trees that I planted in the front yard years ago. At this point, Dexter kept a very close watch. "Hey, watch out for those trees!" he said; "My MOM planted those trees!"

My husband went out many times during the day to talk with the men and to check on progress. He also communicated to them the importance of not harming any of our trees. The digging was done by mid-day, but the engineer came by after the work day ended and pronounced the trench not quite deep enough on the corner. So perhaps the digging is NOT done after all . . .

In honor of all of the digging that went on this day, the tune to accompany this picture of Dexter the vigilant Tabbycat is Pete Townshend's Dig, from the Iron Man, the Musical.
