The Lost Kingdom of Elmet

Elmet was an independent kingdom covering a region of what later became the West Riding of Yorkshire. It was 'operational' in the early Middle Ages - between about the 5th century and early 7th century.
The fort at Castle Hill, Almondbury (Huddersfield) was an important guardian of its western border.
The tower (Victoria Tower) was built to celebrate Queen Victoria's 60 years as monarch, and was opened in 1899.
