Why did the hedgehog cross the road?

I was on my way to pick up the children when I spotted this hedgehog crossing the road. I didn't have my camera with me and since I was close to home I quickly dashed back to get it. I needn't have rushed as he hadn't gone far! I couldn't see any obvious injury but it's possible he was wounded. He was safely on the pavement when I left him but gone on my return from school. Am still not sure why the hedgehog was crossing the road (especially in daylight). Hope he found his way back home.
