Last remaining - no longer

The weeks of effort in rearing and protecting their young were in vain, the last Plover chick died yesterday. Found the chick's body fully intact and has no external damage.
We are suspecting it may have been killed by one of the predator birds about; butcher bird, kookaburras and nocturnal jars (Tawny Frogmouth).

MJ and MM came up with this plausible theory: The chick was struck down by the predator but mum and dad plover were causing such a scene that the body could not be retrieve.
This morning, there were a few Kookaburras sitting close by but was unable to get too close and mum and dad Plovers were guarding the scene.
