The Potting Shed

A particularly hot day saw me heading northwards to the village of Nuffield and a visit to Nuffield Place.

Nuffield Place is a relatively recent acquisition by the National Trust.  It was the final home of William Morris and his wife Elizabeth, and when he was made a Viscount in 1934, he took the title Lord Nuffield from the local village of Nuffield, Oxfordshire.

Lord Nuffield made his money by designing and manufacturing cars, starting with the Bullnose Morris, founding the Morris Motors Ltd based in Cowley, Oxford.  Morris Motors Ltd merged with Austin Motor Company in 1952 to found the new holding company,British Motor Company (BMC).

Lord and Lady Nuffied had no children, but instead disbursed a large part of his fortune to charitable causes, and today the Nuffield Foundation continues this work, especially in the area of medicine.
