When one job leads to another...!

We’ve just bought a new freezer to replace our previous one – which is 33 years old and has never gone wrong. We’ve been reluctant to get rid of it as its drawers are made of plastic-covered wire and are very strong (modern freezers all seem to have flimsy plastic drawers which look as if they’ll break if you look too hard at them!). But it’s now looking very corroded at the back and it can’t possibly last much longer.

So I moved the old one out of its place in our utility room, and started to clean behind it to prepare for the new one. Oh Dear! I discovered that a wastepipe, hidden in a skirting box behind the freezer, had been leaking so that water had spread halfway across the floor under the vinyl floor covering.

This was almost history repeating itself, as I had to replace most of this floor 10-15 years ago when a washing-machine tap had been dripping un-noticed for months!

Happily this time the chipboard hasn't yet rotted, so I’m hoping that with the help of a fan-heater and a dehumidifier we can dry it out adequately. As you can see the surface of the flooring is already starting to dry out after about 3 hours of the fan heater being on. But the new freezer will have to go temporarily into another room.

I am, of course, about to replace the pipe connector…
