Hidden Kirkwall

This year's summer social for the craft shop committee involved a historic walking tour of Kirkwall, followed by a fine meal in Lucano's, the local Italian restaurant.

Fascinating looking closely at and learning about parts of the town that you walk past regularly and never hardly notice.  I shall keep my eyes peeled in future and be really boring to anyone I have with me!

This archway is a remnant of the 16th century restoration of the original 11th century St Olaf's Kirk, the kirk that gave Kirkwall its name.

The colourful Ivy Cottage is for Lady Findhorn - a regular visitor to Orkney who I know has a soft spot for it!
