As I walked along the beach at Ardentinny this evening, after an hour or more spent hiking up the forest track above Glenfinart Bay, I reflected that all through my childhood and early adult life I wanted to be able to do this - to be beside the sea more or less when I wanted to, to see the waves in the early evening sun as they moved imperceptibly up the beach with the incoming tide.

It's been over 40 years since that childhood wish became reality, but it gave me as much pleasure today as it always has. And though the shadows of the trees were much further down the sand than they are in the summer, the sun was still bright ...
