Vintage Cycle Escalator

The oldest traffic tunnel in the Netherlands can be found in Rotterdam. It connects the two banks of the River 'Nieuwe Maas' (New Meuse). The first talks of creating a tunnel date back as far as 1899. The tunnel was built from 1937 to 1942 and consists of three tunnels above and next to each other. One for motorists, one for cyclists and one for pedestrians. Construction of the tunnel started in 1937. When World War II reached the Netherlands in May 1940, Rotterdam was heavily bombed. The entire historic city centre was wiped flat. However, the tunnel was spared and it was completed during the Nazi occupation. On the 14th of February 1942 there was a secret opening ceremony without Nazi participation.

This cycle tunnel is accessed by long steep escalators and thrust me they are long and steep, especially if you have to do it with a heavy moped like I did when I was 16.
This shot is made looking down the escalators into the tunnel 20 meters under ground. A the end you can spot two cyclists. If you want to see more then check out these youtube video's. The first one featuring a song about this tunnel by the Amazing Stroopwafels.
